How to use GPS Navigation & Maps

GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout gives you access to maps. Wherever you go, you will have the great OpenStreetMap at your fingertips. And not just that: The new version includes a powerful turn-by-turn navigation to guide you to any desired destination. Read on to find out about the many ways in which GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout can aid you.
Please make sure that your device has clear and unobstructed view towards the sky during use, so you get the best GPS satellite reception possible. You should also keep your device charged as low battery leads to bad GPS reception.

Online or offline usage

As the app caches (saves) a certain amount of map data, you can also use it offline for map areas that you have visited previously. In order to use the map offline without restrictions, you can opt to purchase additional maps via in-app purchases - for more information see 'Map data' > 'Upgrades'.

Main menu

You can enter the main menu at any time by clicking on the main menu icon in the top-left corner.

Closing the app

In order to close the app, click on the back button, while you are in the main map screen.

Free map

This version of GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout includes one free installable map area that you have selected during the first startup of the app. You will be able to access, install and reinstall the selected map area like any other installable map upgrade, even if you decide to reinstall the app at some point.

Map

General

The map mode gives you the opportunity to get your bearings by zooming in and out of the map and by panning around your current position.

You get to the map by clicking on the main menu icon in the top-left corner and then selecting 'Map'.

Map Options

You can access the search functions via the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the map screen. You will also find a settings icon which shows preferences for distance unit, route type or map styles.
Internet connection: Switch between online and offline mode by adding a check here.
Route type: Choose between three different route types (Car mode, Pedestrian mode, Bike mode).
Map style: Change the look of the map. Choose from Day, Night, Outdoor or Simple style.
Show traffic: Enable the traffic feature by adding a check here.
Turnable map: Choose whether the map should be turnable by multitouch or stay northbound.

Map handling

You can use the map in portrait or landscape orientation. Just hold your device accordingly and the map will adjust.
In order to pan the map, drag it with your finger on the screen in any direction.
In order to zoom the map, either pinch your fingers inward or outward (multitouch) or use the '+' and '-' buttons in the bottom right corner of the map.
In order to turn the map, make a swirling motion while tapping on the screen with two fingers simultaneously. Please note that the respective functionality needs to be activated in the app settings.
For advanced interactions with locations on the map, just tap and hold the positions for a short while, until a pin appears at the location. Then click on the pin icon to the left (next to the location's name/coordinates) to see your options.

Current position

Tap on the arrow button in the bottom-left corner to locate your current position.

Location details

Tap on the map and hold the position for a short while, until a pin appears at the location. Then click on the pin icon to the left (next to the location's name/coordinates) to see advanced options.
You can calculate a route to this location, directly navigate there, add it to your favorites, or share it with others via e-mail or social networks (depending on the installed applications on your device).

Navigation

General

GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout will go anywhere with you. And the best part: It will even tell you how to get there. Discover GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout's full-fledged turn-by-turn navigation. In this mode, the app will follow your position on the map and provide visual and spoken advice to guide you to your destination.

Navigate from the map

Navigating from the map screen is easy: When you tap and hold a position on the screen, a popup-menu with details for the location will appear. Tapping the round arrow icon will create up to three alternative routes. You can switch between the different routes by choosing their corresponding buttons on top or by tapping on them directly. The currently selected route is displayed in blue.
Tap the blue arrow in the upper right corner to start the navigation. Otherwise it will begin automatically after 10 seconds.

Navigate from the side menu

Instead of navigating directly from the map screen, you can also do it via the 'Navigate' item from the main menu. This way provides you with several option.

Search address

Enter the address details in the respective entry fields and hit 'Search'. You can choose your destination country via the flag next to the search field for 'city'. Note that it's possible to use abbreviations, which is especially useful for street names (e.g. 'Luisen' for 'Luisenstraße').
Due to the collaborative nature of OpenStreetMap, online search may offer better results than offline. We are working hard on improving this. If possible, please try to have an online connection during destination address entry. For more information on address search, see 'Search'.

Favorites

Choose an item from your list of favorite locations. Pick one of up to three alternative routes. Tap the blue arrow in the upper right corner to start the navigation. It will also begin automatically after 10 seconds. For more information on favorites, see 'Lists'.

Recent

Pick an entry from your list of recently used locations. For more information on recent locations, see 'Lists'.

TripAdvisor

- only available with active internet connection -
You now have access to TripAdvisor, the largest travel site in the world. Find hotels, restaurants, and attractions wherever you go.
Open the TripAdvisor menu. Click on the horizontal bar to set the center of your search, and make your selection. Choose the search radius in the upper right corner and select the topic you are looking for to get a list of results. For more information about TripAdvisor, see 'Search'.

Foursquare

- only available with active internet connection -
The new Foursquare integration lets you tap directly into a community of over 40 million people worldwide. Find interesting locations all around you and see what others are thinking about them.
Open the Foursquare menu under "Search". In order to set the center of your search, click on the horizontal bar and make your selection. Choose the radius by selecting one of the given options in the upper right corner. Type in what you are looking for or choose one of the available topics to get a list of results. Local search (offline)

- only available with installed maps -
If there is no internet connection present, local search will become available. This feature only searches POIs that are present in the maps which you have installed on your device. The search can be started by selecting "Local search" from the navigation menu.
You can search for locations related to a particular search term in a certain radius around your current position or any other one. Choose the appropriate entries concerning search radius, search term and center of the local search in the respective areas of the screen and press 'Search' to get a list of results. For more information about local search, see 'Search'.

Home/Work address

For quick access, pressing the 'Home' and 'Work' buttons will take you to your preset home and work address. Set and change both addresses under settings in the main menu.

Navigation settings

To enter the options screen, simply tap on the screen during navigation and choose 'Settings'. Alternatively, swipe the screen and then choose the settings icon in the upper right corner.
Audio on/off: Pressing this button will switch the audio advice on and off. Please note that the icon always shows its current function. To have audio advice enabled, the button needs to state "Audio off".
Day/Night mode: To ensure good visibility at all times, you can change the map's color scheme by switching between Day and Night mode.
Overview: See the whole route from start to finish in bird's eye view.
Route info: This item provides information about your start and destination point.
Block road: Should you encounter non-accessible roads on your journey (e.g. due to construction work or traffic jams), you can manually block the road ahead in order to not use it in your navigation. Choose 'block road' and the length at which the street unusable and the app will calculate your route accordingly.
Report: If you find a mistake in the map or a fault in the routing you can let us know via this button. Choose the appropriate bug and give some details for the mappers. You can check your bugs' status under "Reported bugs". Thanks for your help!
Panning: This button switches to bird's-eye perspective for an overview over the route. Hit the back button to return to navigation.
2D/3D: Switch between a 2D and a 3D perspective during navigation.
Quit: End the navigation and return to the map.
Volume: Adjust the volume of the audio advice.

Ending the navigation

After reaching your destination, the navigation will automatically end. Press the back button to stay in the map and go on a free drive. Use 'Close' to exit navigation. To leave it manually at any time, simply tap on the screen to open the menu. Choose 'Quit navigation' and confirm.

Pedestrian navigation

You receive turn-by-turn advice during pedestrian navigation. In this mode, the app will follow your position on the map and provide audio-visual advice to guide you to your destination.

Save car position

When using car navigation and approaching your destination, you will be able to save your car's position (within 500 meters from your destination) and continue to navigate in pedestrian mode.
After the car position is saved, a screen with several options will be displayed: pedestrian guidance to destination, edit position, add image, dismiss position or add a note.
This feature also works, if you want to start a pedestian navigation to the saved car position. All you need to do is access the 'My car' option from the main menu and select the navigate icon or go into details and access the 'Pedestrian guidance to car' button.
If you are within 100 meters of your car's position, an option button will appear in the bottom right corner, which offers you the following possibilities: start a car navigation, go in free drive mode, share position, quit, dismiss position, or add a note.

Speed cams

Speed cam warning

***Available in Germany/Switzerland/Austria only***
To make your life a little easier, the new version of GPS Navigation & Maps has a warning system for speed cameras. If there are any static speed cams on your way, the app will automatically give you visible and audible warning signs. The warnings are based on the biggest speed cam warning communities in the respective countries.*
If you want to go one step further, GPS Navigation & Maps also offers an optional Carefree Cruising Package. It includes warnings of mobile speed cams and is upgraded dynamically by an active user community. You can purchase it under the 'Upgrades' section in the main menu.
*Please note that 100% accuracy can not be guaranteed.

On the road

When approaching a speed camera, the map will turn red and the app will start showing a warning icon surrounded by a distance indicator. As you get closer, additional audio warnings are given at intervals.
Once you have passed the speed cam, you can confirm or disconfirm its position by clicking on the respective buttons. This will keep the speed cam database up to date and helps other people in the community who are using the same feature.

Reporting speed cams

If you spot a speed cam that doesn't appear in the map, you have the option to report it directly from the app. To do so, access the menu by tapping on the screen while in navigation mode. Pick 'Report' and choose either static or mobile speed camera (note that reporting mobile speed cams is only available if you upgraded to the Carefree Cruising Package). In the next step, choose the camera type (speed, red light, etc.) and the speed limit if applicable. Done - the speed cam has been reported.
Don't worry about going past the camera, the app will take your speed into account and report it some distance before you hit 'Report'. Alternatively you can reach the report feature via 'Settings' in the navigation menu. Thank you!

Free Drive

General

If you have no need for a friendly voice giving you directions but still want to be warned of speed cams, the Free Drive feature is just the thing for you.

Using Free Drive

Free Drive provides you with an overview over your current surroundings, shows the name and speed limit of the street you are on (if available in the map) and the speed you are currently going at. When getting close to a speed camera, the app will warn you with audible and visual cues. For more information about speed cam warnings, please refer to the respective section.
To quit Free Drive, tap on the screen to open the menu and choose quit.

Routing

General

You can display routes for pedestrians, bikes, and cars between two points on the map.

Create a route from menu

Choose 'Route' from the main menu. Make your choice in the top-right corner on whether you want to calculate a route for car, bike, or pedestrian use. Then select a start and destination point.
You can alter the route mode (car, bike, or pedestrian) as well as start and destination by clicking on the info bar at the bottom of the map while the route is displayed. Tapping on 'X' ends the routing mode.

Routing from the map

Alternatively, you can select a location in the map by tapping and holding it until a context menu is displayed. Enter the details screen by clicking on the pin icon to the left and select 'show route' to create a route between this point and your current position.
Alter the route mode (car, bike, or pedestrian) as well as start and destination by clicking on the info bar at the bottom of the map while the route is displayed. Tap 'X' to end the routing.

Search

General

All of the available search functions in GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout have now been unified under one option. Everything you will ever be looking for you should be able to find with the help of the 'Search' function in the main menu. You can also get there via the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the map screen.

Address search (online)

This describes the address search, while having an internet connection.
You can look for addresses by clicking on 'Address search'. Make sure that you conduct your search in the correct country, which you can choose via the flag next to the search field for 'city'.
Enter your search criteria in the entry fields. Please enter at least a city. Press 'Search' to see the result list. To use one of the results as your destination and directly start navigating to it, simply press the arrow button.
Click on 'Map' in the top-right corner to see the search results displayed on the map. You can go back to the result list by pressing the list icon above the positioning arrow in the bottom-left corner of the map. Selecting one of the search results will center the map at its location. By using the arrow button, you can start a navigation towards it with your current position as a starting point.
If you start a navigation, up to three alternative routes will be calculated. You can switch between the different routes by choosing their corresponding buttons on top or by tapping on them directly. The currently selected route is displayed in blue.
In order to get back to the map, click on the main menu icon in the top-left corner and select 'Map' in the main menu.

Address search (offline)

- only available with installed maps -
This describes the address search without using an internet connection (offline). You can only search maps in offline mode that you have installed on your device.
You can look for addresses by clicking on 'Address search' in in the search menu. Make sure that you conduct your search in the correct country, which you can choose via the flag next to the search field for 'city'.
Enter your search criteria in the entry fields. You have to perform the entry step-by-step: first the city, then the street, then the house number (in case you are in the US, the order will be: state, house number, street, city). Your current search results are listed below. When you select a result, the map will center at its location. You can also start a navigation from there.

Category search

A category search looks for locations that match your category choice in a certain radius around a specific position.
You can enter Category search via the main menu. In order to set the center of your search, click on the horizontal bar and make your selection. Choose the radius by selecting one of the given options.
Select the main category of your search by clicking on one of the symbols below your selected center position (e.g. 'nightlife'). Pick one of the sub-categories (e.g. 'bar') to see a list of all search results that match your criteria. To use one of them as your destination and directly start navigating towards it, simply press the arrow button.
If you start a navigation, up to three alternative routes will be calculated. You can switch between the different routes by choosing their corresponding buttons on top or by tapping on them directly. The currently selected route is displayed in blue.
Selecting one of the search results will center the map on this location. Use the arrow button to start navigating towards the selected location with your current position as a starting point. Go back to the result list by clicking on the list icon above the positioning arrow in the bottom-left corner of the map.

TripAdvisor

- only available with active internet connection -
Via the 'Search' menu you now have access to TripAdvisor, the largest travel site in the world. Find hotels, restaurants, and attractions wherever you go.
Open the TripAdvisor menu. Click on the horizontal bar to set the center of your search, and make your selection. Choose the search radius in the upper right corner.
Next, select whether you are looking for a hotel, restaurant, or something to do. Note that you can only display one category at a time. GPS Navigation & Maps will then take you to a results screen that includes rating and price range. Tap on one of the results to see details about it.
The blue elements under 'More Info' will take you to the TripAdvisor mobile view. 'Map' shows the results of your search on the map. Tapping one of them opens a context menu and the arrow brings you to the details screen. From here you can create a route to its location, directly navigate towards it, save it to your favorites, or share it.

Foursquare

- only available with active internet connection -
The new Foursquare integration lets you tap directly into a community of over 40 million people worldwide. Find interesting locations all around you and see what others are thinking about them.
Open the Foursquare menu under 'Search'. In order to set the center of your search, click on the horizontal bar and make your selection. Choose the radius by selecting one of the given options in the upper right corner.
Type in what you are looking for or select one of the available topics. This will take you to the next screen in which all results from Foursquare are presented including their rating, the number of people who have been there, and special recommendations.
Choosing one of the results brings you to a details screen. Tap the image to view larger ones and then swipe through them to get a better impression.
From here you can also directly call the place and visit their website ( (if available in Foursquare). Via 'Open Foursquare' you can also check it directly in the Foursquare app if you have it installed.
'Map' displays the result of your search on the map. Be aware that only the results of the current category will be displayed. Tapping one of them will open a context menu and the arrow brings you to a details screen. Here you can create a route to the POI, start a navigation towards it, add the place to your favorites, or share it.

Coordinates

Here you can enter longitude and latitude coordinates of a destination address. You can either choose to enter them in the Degree/Minutes/Seconds format via pickers or as float degrees in free text input. After hitting 'Search', the map will immediately jump to your desired position.

Local search (offline)

- only available with installed maps -
If there is no internet connection present, local search will become available. This feature only searches POIs that are present in the maps which you have installed on your device. The search can be started by selecting "Local search" from the search menu.
Local search looks for locations that match your search keyword(s) in a certain radius around a specific position. In order to set the center position of your search, click on the horizontal bar and make your selection. Choose the radius by selecting one of the given options. Enter your search term (e.g. 'pizza') and press 'Search' to see the result list. To use one of the results as the destination point and directly start navigating towards it, simply press the arrow button.
If you start a navigation, up to three alternative routes will be calculated. You can switch between the different routes by choosing their corresponding buttons on top or by tapping on them directly. The currently selected route is displayed in blue.

Lists

Recent

All locations you access on the map or use to create a route are automatically saved in your 'recent locations' for easy access. They are similar to a “history“ of you location interactions.
Quickly find your last positions on the map again, add them to your favorites, share or use them for navigation. Tapping the trash can icon will delete an item from the list. To empty the list, use the 'clear' option in the upper right corner. You find an option to sort your recent locations by time, distance or name in the same place.
If you are logged into your skobbler account from the 'skobbler login' menu, you will have the option to synchronize your web recents with the ones that you have stored on the device.

Favorites

You can browse your saved favorites in this list for easy access. All locations can be saved as a favorite by entering the location's detail screen on the map and clicking the 'Favorite' button.
A tap on the pen icon lets you edit the item's name, so you know whether it's your favorite pizza place or the greengrocer's. Of course you can also delete or share your favorites or use them in a route. The options menu in the upper right lets you add more items to the list or sort it by time, distance, and name.
If you are logged into your skobbler account from the 'skobbler login' menu, you will have the option to synchronize your web favorites with the ones that you have stored on the device.

Contacts

GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout can access the address data in your device's contact list and take you directly to them. Merely press on one of your contacts to center the map on that address. Then press the blue arrow in the upper right corner to start navigation or wait until it starts automatically. You can also start the navigation directly from the contact list by using the arrow button on the right.
Please note that you need to either have an online connection or the target area's map installed in order to use this feature.

Upgrades

Map Data

The offline maps are what makes GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout so great. Take the maps of whole countries with you on your travels. Use GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout offline and forget about roaming charges.
It is up to you which countries you would like to have installed on your device at any given time. Once you have purchased a map you can delete and reinstall it at will. This allows you to only carry only the maps that you really need while avoiding unnecessary waste of storage space. Pressing 'Restore' brings back your previous purchases.
When downloading maps, make sure your device has a wifi-connection. Some of the maps are bigger in size and, depending on your plan and provider, might result in higher phone charges if you download them via a data connection.

My maps

Find all your purchased and installed maps in this section. You can install and uninstall individual maps by clicking on the arrow or trash can icon next to it.

Download status

This section shows the download status of all maps or sound files, whether it is in progress, paused or finished. You can cancel each download or all of them at once, by tapping on the settings icon.
Once all downloads are finished, you can clear the list via the 'Clear' button in the top bar.

Traffic data

From now on, GPS Navigation & Maps - Scout will provide you with up-to-date traffic information. Using this new feature, you can easily avoid delays due to construction, road closures and traffic congestion and arrive at your destination on time.
- Please note that our new traffic feature will only be supported by current devices (market release from 2013 onwards) -

Integrated traffic information

This integrated feature shows events, i.e. traffic obstructions caused by construction, road closures or traffic congestion and assists you in avoiding them. At the same time, you will be informed about the length of the possible delay.

Real-Time Traffic (RPT)

This package, available as an 'in-app' purchase, includes events as well as premium information about the traffic flow. The Real-Time Premium Traffic (RPT) upgrade provides you with superior traffic intelligence in many countries by international market leader INRIX. You get the same data that is otherwise being used in premium cars and high-end navigation solutions at an incredibly low price.
RPT will greatly enhance routing during turn-by-turn navigation as well as give you additional, color-coded information about the current traffic situation on the map. The display changes from green (normal traffic flow) to orange (slow traffic) and red (stop-and-go traffic) to dark red (traffic jam or closure). In addition, the possible delay in your journey will be displayed and if required, you can have the route automatically recalculated.

Restore purchases

There are situations when your additional purchases are not automatically available. This can happen when you have changed your device, or when you want to use the upgrades on other devices, or after you have deleted or reinstalled the app. In these cases, you can access your additional packages with the help of the 'Restore purchases' feature. In order to do that, you have to log in with the Google-ID credentials you used when you originally purchased the app. Next, tap on 'Restore Purchases' and re-download your offline maps.

Share

Share location

Share your whereabouts, the location of your new favorite restaurant, or other interesting things via e-mail or on social networks (depending on the installed applications on your device).

To do so, choose a location on the map, enter the location detail screen and press the "Share" button. Or select "Share" from the main menu and then choose your location.

Settings

The settings section allows you to easily tweak the app to your liking. You find it in the main menu. For more details, see 'Settings'.

OpenStreetMap

GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout is using map material from the OpenStreetMap (www.openstreetmap.org). Here you can learn more about this awesome project, how you can contribute, and find apps from the OSM universe that help you do so.

skobbler account

Log into your skobbler account or create one if you haven't done so already. With a skobbler account you can discover locations on the web and use them on the go. After logging in, your favorite places saved on www.skobbler.com will be merged with the ones on your device.

Feedback

Let us and everybody else know, which ideas we should implement next. You can either post your own idea and have the skobbler users vote on it or you simply rate the ideas of other skobbler users.

Reported bugs

If you report any bugs in the map, this screen allows you to follow the progress that is being made in correcting them. To report bugs such as mistakes in the map or a fault in the routing, tap on the screen during navigation and choose 'Settings'. There, tap the 'Report' button. Select the appropriate bug and give some more details for the mappers. Done.

Settings

General

The settings section allows you to easily tweak the app to your liking.
Time format: Choose between a 12h and a 24h time format.
Full screen: Enable/disable full screen mode.
Language selection: For all you polyglots out there, GPS Navigation & Maps - Scout is available in British and American English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Russian, Danish, Hungarian, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, and Turkish.
The app also features text-to-speech funtionality, which includes voice prompts with street names for even better orientation. In order to use this feature, you need to select the dedicated text-to-speech options from the language selection screen.
Select storage: Choose between Internal memory and Application storage (only available when SD card is inserted in the device).
Internet connection: Switch between online and offline mode. In offline mode the app will be prohibited from using an internet connection and you will need to have maps installed.
Floating Car Data: Enable/disable anonymous traffic analysis for app improvement.
Avoid standby: Disable the device's standby mode.
Wifi positioning warning: Enables or disables the popup that asks you to switch on wifi positioning for better results.

Map settings

Distance unit: Change the way distance is measured in GPS Navigation & Maps - Scout. You can choose between Kilometers/Meters, Miles/Feet, and Miles/Yards.
Display map in local language: If turned on, available elements of the map will be displayed in the local language instead of the standard language.
Zoom buttons: Enable or disable the zoom buttons on the map screen.
Scale: Decide whether or not a scale should be displayed on the map screen.

Map Styles

Auto Night: When automatic night mode is enabled, the map will switch to the night map style based on sunrise and sunset times in your time zone.
Style: Change the look of the map. Choose between Day, Night, Outdoor, and Simple map style.

Navigation settings

Primary route profile: Switch the route profile between taking the fastest, most efficient, or shortest route.
Avoid toll roads: If enabled, the navigation will avoid streets that are designated as toll roads.
Avoid highways: This option keeps the navigation from using highways for its routes.
Avoid ferries: If enabled, the navigation will avoid ferries.
Display street names as popups: Change how street names are being displayed, either directly on the street or as a popup above.
Map display: Switch between 2D and 3D navigation.
Here you can also change the settings for traffic information. Select whether you want the app to display no traffic information, only events or events and premium traffic flow information. You can also specify here whether you want the route to be recalculated automatically.
Navigation background mode: Determine whether or not navigation should continue when the app is put into the background.
Play audio advice during phone calls: Determine whether or not to play audio advice while you are talking on the phone.
Home/Work address: Set and change your home and work address to easily use them in navigation.
Audio Output: Enables you to connect the audio output to an external source via bluetooth.

Speed warning

In navigation mode GPS Navigation & Maps by Scout contains a speed warning system. If you go too fast, the app will tell you to slow down. This menu item lets can determine the thresholds for when the warning is given in town and out of town.
Speed cams: Determine which speed cams should be displayed on the map: mobile, static, or none. If you have bought the speed cam update, all types of speed cams can be displayed.

Other

Map cache size: Determines the maximum size for the map cache.
Delete map cache: Manually delete the map cache in case your device is running low on space.
DeviceID: Should you have problems with the free map, this option provides you with an ID we can use to help find a solution.
